Actor Brian McCardie, renowned for his portrayal of crime boss Tommy Hunter in Line of Duty, has passed away at the age of 59. The news of his sudden demise at home on Sunday was shared by his sister Sarah, herself an actor, in a heartfelt social media post.
McCardie had recently appeared in the BBC drama Time and had been involved in filming the upcoming Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood. His family expressed their deep sorrow, stating that he had departed too soon, while also describing him as a remarkable and dedicated actor.

BBC Scotland’s head of commissioning, Louise Thornton, described Brian McCardie as a “talented and versatile actor across stage and screen,” acknowledging his remarkable abilities in both mediums.
Writer and director Alec Bowman_Clarke took to social media to express his admiration for McCardie, describing him as genuine, passionate, generous, and funny.
McCardie’s interest in acting began during his time at school in North Lanarkshire. He later resided in Rothesay.
His portrayal of gang lord Tommy Hunter in the initial two seasons of Line of Duty earned him high acclaim.
McCardie’s screen credits include notable films such as Rob Roy, Filth, and The Damned United, where he portrayed the legendary Scottish footballer Dave Mackay.
He also made appearances in various TV roles, including the mini-series Titanic, the Agatha Christie adaptation Murder is Easy, and the Dundee-set drama Dog Days.
