A new fund has been established to honor the life and remarkable career of Cliff Becker, an alumnus of WIU (Western Illinois University), who had a significant impact in the field of agriculture. Becker, originally from Oak Park, IL, graduated from WIU in 1984 with a degree in Agriculture. He was a fourth-generation farmer and dedicated 39 years to the agricultural industry.

During his career, Becker held prominent positions, including executive vice president at Farm Journal for over 10 years and senior vice president and publishing director for Vance Publishing’s food360 division for 23 years. At the time of his passing, he served as the vice president of New Campus Development for the American Royal in Kansas City, MO.

Cliff Becker’s Legacy at Western Illinois University

  • He served as the vice president of the School’s Advisory Board and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2021.
  • His passion for the university and commitment to the agricultural program inspired his wife, Kristine, to establish the Cliff Becker Agriculture Excellence Fund in his memory.

The Cliff Becker Agriculture Excellence Fund

  • Once endowed, the fund will provide annual unrestricted resources to the School of Agriculture.
  • The fund will enable the school to pursue emerging opportunities, address crucial needs, and support student success.
  • Becker’s dedication to keeping youth engaged in the agricultural sector and his desire to offer insight and mentorship to college students were instrumental in establishing this fund.

Kristine, with the support of Becker’s connections in the agricultural publishing industry and his achievements at the American Royal, chose WIU as the platform for preserving Cliff’s legacy. The Becker Fund will assist the School of Agriculture in recognizing individuals and activities that embody Cliff’s determination, energy, resilience, and positive attitude.

The response to the establishment of the Becker Fund has been overwhelming, with over 90 individuals already contributing to honor Cliff’s memory. Alumni, friends, and supporters are encouraged to join this initiative and help endow the fund, ensuring its lasting impact on the School of Agriculture.

The School of Agriculture Advisory Board has taken the lead in promoting the Becker Fund during WIU’s annual day of giving, Western Challenge, scheduled for Wednesday, April 24.
